Lufkin Coca–Cola employees spent part of their Wednesday morning installing sheetrock, washing windows and painting window frames at the Lufkin Habitat for Humanity home under construction.

As part of the corporation′s mission to live positively, the 13 Coca–Cola distribution centers under the Houston headquarters volunteer once a month with local nonprofits.

"As employees, we are embedded into the community," said Hector Amaya, Houston Market Unit Vice President for Product Supply. "We′re consumers, too. We want to watch our lifestyles so we come across as contributing to the community and giving over and over again to the community."

In April, Lufkin Coca–Cola teamed up with Brookshire Brothers to sell specially marked Sprite and Sprite Zero 12– and 20–pack cases with unique green tabs and Habitat for Humanity logos in 62 Brookshire Brothers stores. For every green Sprite tab collected and mailed in through June 30, Sprite donated 10 cents to the Angelina County Habitat for Humanity Chapter, according to a press release.

On Wednesday, Sprite presented a $6,400 check to the local nonprofit as part of a multi–year initiative to positively impact neighborhood parks and communities.

"We′re glad the two hometown companies (Lufkin Coca–Cola and Brookshire Brothers) can come together," said Matt Smith, Large Store Account Executive and Customer Relationship Manager with Lufkin Coca–Cola. "Brookshire Brothers has been very generous, and this is a great opportunity for Lufkin."
