"Books, to the reading child,
are so much more than
books--they are dreams
and knowledge, they are
a future, and a past."

~ Esther Meynell

Sign up to be a HOSTS mentor

"Where do HOSTS mentoring sessions take place?"
Mentoring sessions take place in the HOSTS Lab on the Brandon Elementary School campus. The coordinators go to extra lengths to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in which mentors feel welcomed and students feel comfortable and are eager to participate.

"Are there any special qualifications?" If you have a desire to see a child succeed and are able to follow simple instructions, you are qualified.

"How much time does it take?" Each mentoring session is 30 minutes in length. Mentors work with the students Monday through Thursday. Some choose to sign up for one session, one day per week while others fill a time slot on a daily basis.

"Is there any training involved?" New volunteers are asked to attend a brief training session given by the HOSTS Coordinator. Everything is really very simple and thorough instructions are given at the beginning of each mentoring session.

"What is accomplished during a 30-minute session?" Students and their mentors enjoy reading together and participating in language arts activities. Each session is divided into segments to allow enough time for certain objectives to be met.
